2026-2027 Open Access Publishing Agreement with Wiley
The Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Center for Library Programs has secured an Open Publishing Agreement with Wiley that provides open publishing opportunities for affiliated corresponding authors through December 31, 2027, while maintaining full read access to Wiley’s Online Library journals.
For affiliated corresponding authors, this new agreement provides the ability to publish open access (OA) in Wiley’s hybrid OA journals (“Online Open”) without individual article fees for articles editorially accepted in 2026 and 2027. In addition, there is a limited allocation for publishing in Wiley’s gold OA journals (“Fully Open Access”).
The following outlines the specific access benefits, submission requirements and deadlines for UW authors:
For Reading Access:
- All access: UW users have full read access to all Wiley Online Library journals.
For Publishing Rights:
- Hybrid OA articles: Articles ACCEPTED in 2026 and 2027 are unlimited and uncapped. UW Authors have unlimited open access publishing in Wiley Hybrid OA journals at no cost as long as the article is accepted by December 31, 2027.
- Fully Open Access (Gold) Journals – Articles SUBMITTED by August 31, 2026 are covered at no cost. After this date, UW authors will begin to see Article Processing Charges (APC fees) that need to be paid from other sources. NOTE: UW Libraries has no central fund to finance APCs for individual articles.
Plan Ahead
UW Authors who are considering publishing in a Wiley journal should be mindful of the submission-to-acceptance timeline for each journal. Timelines can vary significantly from a few months to over a year. Depending on the journal group (as outlined above) and the corresponding deadline, UW authors need to consider the potential need to fund APCs and sources for funding.
