Odegaard Library 3rd Floor Recarpeting Project: What to Know

Odegaard Library will celebrate its 55th birthday in November, and although it had an award-winning renovation in 2013, some parts of the original library from 1972 still remain. One of those parts is the carpeting on the 3rd floor, which is showing its age in 2026.
That’s why we are excited to announce that the 3rd floor is getting brand new carpeting in the 2026-2027 school year! As part of this project, the shelving on the 3rd floor will also be re-spaced to create a more accessible browsing experience.
Here’s everything you need to know about this year-long project.
What is happening?
The 3rd floor of Odegaard Library is getting brand new carpet and more accessible shelving. This will be a year-long project that includes moving furniture, relocating the book collection, breaking down shelving, tearing out the old carpet, putting in the new carpet, and returning all the shelving, books, and furniture to their new locations.
When will it start and end?
The project will begin in July 2026 and will continue in phases throughout the school year with an estimated completion date of August 2027. We will update this page as the project progresses if there are any changes to projected dates.
Will I still be able to use the 3rd floor study rooms and quiet study space?
Unfortunately, no. The entire quiet study area, and most of the study rooms on the 3rd floor will be unavailable for the duration of the project starting in July 2026. Study rooms 322, 323, and 324 will open for fall quarter, but noise from construction could impact desire to study in those rooms.
Is the Wellness Room going to be accessible?
YES, the Wellness room will remain open for the duration of the project unless otherwise noted.
Where else can I find quiet study space?
Quiet study space can be found in Allen Library in room 181. You can also view this page for a list of other library study spaces.
What about the books on the 3rd floor? Will I still be able to borrow them?
Yes, but because the books will be stored in another location during the project, you will not be able to freely browse the collection. As always, you can request any book from the online catalog and our staff will retrieve them for you and put them on the hold shelf of your choice.
Will this work be noisy?
Yes, parts of this work may be noisy. We will do our best to alert building users with signage about when the noisiest work will be completed, but we may not always know when this will be.
Who can I contact with questions?
If you have any questions or concerns about this project, feel free to contact Odegaard Library Administration at [email protected] or Libraries Facilities at [email protected].
