The Position

Job Title:  GMM Student Assistant
Location/Department: Suzzallo & Allen Libraries / Government Publications, Maps, Microforms & Newspapers (GMM)
Rate: $19.97
Hours: 15 hours per week

Duties

  • Regularly staff the GMM help desk, answering general questions about
    library collections and services and assisting in circulation activities.
  • Help library users get started with their research using UW Libraries
    Search.
  • Help library users to locate microforms, newspapers, maps and government
    documents using various research tools.
  • Assist and instruct users in the use of GMM equipment, including
    computers, scanners, and microform machines.
  • Retrieve, count, and accurately re-file library materials.
  • Process incoming GMM materials and gifts.
  • Independently staff the GMM Help Desk during evenings, weekends, and
    holidays as needed.
  • Carefully handle rare, one of a kind, library materials to stage for
    microfilming, digitization, or rehousing.
  • Undertake additional duties such as special materials processing,
    digitization, or display creation.

Required Qualifications

  • Clear communication skills in person and on the phone.
  • Availability for weekend, evening, and holiday work based on staffing
    needs of the unit.
  • Ability to work independently after training.
  • Dependable attendance once a schedule is set.
  • Willingness to ask questions and collaborate with fellow student
    employees.
  • Strong public service demeanor.
  • Excellent attention to detail to ensure accurate processing and shelving
    of materials. An ability to maintain quality standards on repetitive,
    detail oriented tasks.

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in working with primary source materials.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office/Google Suite of products preferred.
