Duties
- Co-facilitate the OSC Recording Studio in tandem with the Computer Support Analyst and Open Scholarship & Digital Arts Librarian
- Assist patrons with recording sessions as needed:
- Help users with editing, mixing, and mastering audio recordings and videos
- Help with setting up and breaking down equipment for patron’s recording sessions.
- Advise on microphone placement, cable management, and other capture equipment as needed.
- Occasional editing of OSC workshops and events for posting to Library’s YouTube channel
- Operate recording software and hardware under the guidance of senior staff, though often independently
- Oversees checkout of supplies and maintains inventory of studio supplies and equipment
- Ensure all studio equipment is properly maintained and in good working order
- Assist with documentation and record keeping
- Help manage studio bookings and scheduling
- Perform routine checks and minor repairs on audio equipment
- Inform users on the importance of backing up data
- Provide creative ideas and suggestions during production to novice users
- Answer patron inquiries via email
- Schedule one-on-one consultations with patrons
Required Qualifications
- Experience with digital audio, podcasting, video making/editing or radio
- Basic knowledge of video and audio recording equipment.
- Familiarity with digital audio workstations (e.g. GarageBand, Audacity, Adobe Audition).
- Ability to work independently or with patrons of various skill level
- Passion for audio and video production and communication of ideas/research through various mediums
- Ability to teach and communicate digital audio skills
Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience in a recording studio or similar environment
- Proficient in Logic, ProTools, FinalCut Pro or similar software
- Comfortable with presenting to medium sized groups
Other Job Details
The OSC Recording Studio is seeking an enthusiastic student assistant to support the daily operations and technical aspects of the studio. This position offers hands-on experience in audio production, providing an excellent opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in music production, sound engineering, or related fields. Users of the studio will vary in their levels of proficiency and the student employee must be able to match their capability and meet their needs with patience. The primary focus of this position will be hardware and software support in the studio space with patrons, as well as answering patron inquiries via email. Editing of OSC recordings is also a requirement.
The Open Scholarship Commons (OSC) is an active Libraries space dedicated to teaching skills on openly sharing research and translating it to general audiences. The story of research can be told through a variety of ways and this role emphasizes the creation of digital media to that end. We’re here to support scholars, creators, and learners from diverse backgrounds to learn from each other and build the skills necessary to co-create, share, translate, and make the impact of their research visible to the world.
