Overview

This position is managed in partnership with the iSchool and eligibility is limited to students enrolled in the iSchool MLIS program

Located in the Libraries’ Research Commons, the Graduate Funding Information Service provides consultation services to University of Washington graduate students seeking funding sources to support their studies and research. We seek applicants with initiative who will manage the service effectively, creatively, and independently. The qualified candidate must be able to use and apply new technology, be sensitive to the needs of diverse users, be deeply committed to service and research, and possess strong teaching or presentation skills.

The position will work closely with the Research Communication & English Studies Librarian to promote GFIS services and plan GFIS programming in the Open Interdisciplinary Research Support Unit. The GFIS Staff Assistant may also learn about and occasionally participate in the work of the Research Commons and UW Libraries to further GFIS’s connection with other Libraries services, as appropriate.

Enrollment in a UW graduate program (10 credit hours minimum Fall, Winter and Spring Quarter) is required.

Duties

  • Present online workshops on how to identify funding sources.
  • Advise students in person and online using Zoom and email about funding resources and opportunities, recommend print and electronic funding sources, and assist users with creating custom database searches.
  • Promote GFIS services to campus departments and graduate student organizations; may collaborate with staff in the Graduate School and academic departments.
  • Enhance and maintain the GFIS web site, blog, and funding resources subject guide.
  • May suggest books or other materials for purchase and inclusion in the Libraries collection.
  • Undertaking user assessment as needed.
  • Create instructional materials such as print handouts and online tutorials.
  • Keep up with current scholarship resources.
  • Maintain organization files and write an annual report.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Full-time enrollment in the Information School’s MLIS program as a residential student or full-time online student
  • Strong public service orientation, including excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience teaching, tutoring/consulting, providing direct public service, or making presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • General knowledge of or interest in funding resources, the financial aid process, and the overall UW environment.
  • Experience with and advanced knowledge of online database and web searching.
  • Experience with and/or demonstrated commitment to working with diverse users.
  • Incoming first-year MLIS student preferred.
