Job Title: Access and Building Services Student Assistant – CLOSER

Location/Department: Odegaard Access and Building Services – Seattle

Rate: $21.30/hr

Hours: 10-18; Work shifts are scheduled between 11:00 am-12:15 am (unless you request an earlier shift)

Duties

  • Staffs the Entry and Information desks
  • Shelves and shifts library materials in alphanumerical order according to the Library of congress call number system.
  • Performs basic circulation processing tasks such as checking items in & out.
  • Inventories the collection; searches for missing volumes; and retrieves library materials
  • Keeps routine statistical records
  • Receives, unpacks, sorts, and delivers mail, gifts, and other material
  • May assist in opening and closing procedures of library
  • Assists with ID checks at entry
  • Assists the unit with projects that impact users and the department (as assigned)
  • Work in a small group (“pod”) of student assistants led by a senior student employee. Your pod will work on projects like book displays, and receive continuing training from your pod leader. Student assistants must attend pod meetings three times per quarter. These meetings are paid work time.

Job Expectations/Conditions of Employment

  • Student employees are not eligible to continue working after graduation.
  • Able to work for two quarters, Fall and Winter quarters. Each quarter a new schedule is made, with weekly recurring shifts.
  • Work shifts during interims are optional, and scheduled by sign-up.
  • Able to work on holidays that Odegaard is open, and during finals week.
  • Must work at least 10 hours per week, and may work 18 hours per week at most.
  • Able to start work in-person by Sept 14th.
  • CLOSER position: Work shifts are scheduled between 11:00am-12:15am (unless you request an earlier shift). Must be able to provide work availability for at least two Sun-Thurs 12:15am closing shifts and one weekend shift. You may not be scheduled for all those shifts, but would be expected to work them if you were. You would be a closer for Fall and Winter quarters (excluding interims).

Required Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining regular attendance.
  • Interest in developing customer service skills & working with people.
  • Is detail-oriented.
  • Strong commitment to serving a diverse group of library users.
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Able to explain complex procedures clearly, both in person and over the phone.
  • Able to shelve and retrieve books in alphanumerical order according to the Library of Congress call number system. We will instruct you on the Library of Congress call number system as part of the interview process.

Desired qualifications

  • Previous library work experience
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Good work availability.
  • Eligible and able to continue working after Winter quarter, into Spring quarter or longer.
  • Work study award letter from financial aid
  • Experience working with diverse groups
