The Position

Job Title: Bookbinding Student Assistant

Location/Department: Conservation Center (Suzzallo/Allen Libraries) – Seattle

Rate: $21.30/hr

Hours:12-18 hours per week; 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Onsite: Monday – Thursday, exact schedule to be arranged

Duties

  • Work in the Libraries book conservation unit, performing hand methods of pamphlet binding and box construction for library materials.
  • Learn preparation and hand sewing of materials into prefabricated pamphlet binders, and construction of covers and pockets for music scores and parts.
  • Required hand skills include measuring, cutting, folding, gluing, and sewing.
  • May include other related tasks.
  • Training will be provided.

Required Qualifications

  • Manual dexterity, precision, attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Personal reliability and flexibility.
  • Willingness to perform repeated tasks.
  • Available to work for two or more quarters.
  • Ability to work over the summer.

Desired qualifications

  • Past experience performing related hand skills is very desirable.
  • Interest in books, binding, or library preservation.
  • Ability to read music.
  • Patience
