Overview
Central Circulation Services maintains several collections of library materials in Suzzallo and Allen Libraries, totaling about 3 million items.
In addition to maintaining these collections, staff are also responsible for operating the Circulation Desk and the Receiving Room for the building. Student staff in this position begin by working primarily in the stacks shelving and shifting library materials before training to work at our service desks. Whether staffing a desk or working in the stacks, student staff are expected to provide excellent customer service to our diverse library users. Due to the amount of training required for the position, you should be able to work at least two quarters.
Duties
- Shelve library materials
- Shift high volumes of library materials
- Search, pull and process requested items
- Pick up and process materials that have been returned or left unattended
- Deliver books and mail throughout the Suzzallo and Allen Libraries
- Receive and sort mail, books, and incoming deliveries
- Assist with Library opening and/or closing procedures
- Conduct inventory of library materials
- Assist with special projects and other circulation duties as assigned
- Provide basic assistance, direction, general information, and explain library policies, services and procedures to UW students, staff, faculty and library visitors
- Provide customer service at the Suzzallo and Allen Libraries Circulation Desk
Required Qualifications
- Ability to push loaded book trucks, lift up to 40lbs, and work on your feet for extended periods of time.
- Ability to move high volume of books between spaces.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Strong commitment to providing equitable service to a diverse group of users.
- Ability to work independently and follow procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, coworkers, and library users.
Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience providing customer service in a job or volunteer position.
