Duties
- Review metadata records in spreadsheets, digital repositories, and library systems to identify inconsistencies, missing data, and formatting issues.
- Compare metadata records across systems and source documents to detect discrepancies and support metadata remediation efforts.
- Document metadata quality issues and assist in the development of remediation strategies and workflows.
- Perform metadata cleanup and normalization activities according to established standards and procedures.
- Create and maintain spreadsheets, reports, and documentation related to metadata remediation projects.
- Assist with data transformation and mapping activities involving multiple metadata schemas and data formats.
- Develop, test, and maintain scripts, formulas, macros, or other automated tools to support metadata analysis and cleanup processes.
- Support quality control efforts for digital collections and metadata projects.
- Assist with special projects related to digital collections, metadata management, and discovery systems.
- Create and update workflow documentation and training materials as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to identify patterns and inconsistencies in data.
- Experience working with spreadsheets, including sorting, filtering, formulas, and data analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to learn and apply detailed procedures and documentation.
- Ability to work independently after training.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to maintaining high-quality metadata and data standards.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of, coursework in, or experience with one or more of the following:
- Metadata standards, including Dublin Core and MARC21.
- Digital libraries, archives, museums, or information science.
- CONTENTdm or other digital collection management systems.
- Metadata remediation, quality assurance, or data cleanup projects.
- Python, JavaScript, SQL, VBA, or other programming/scripting languages.
- Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or other data analysis tools.
- XML, CSV, JSON, or related structured data formats.
- Library cataloging or metadata creation practices.
- Artificial intelligence or machine learning tools used for data analysis and quality assessment.
Other Job Details
Cataloging and Metadata Services (CAMS) provides enhanced copy and original cataloging, metadata services, and metadata consultation for materials and digital collections across the University of Washington Libraries. CAMS supports discovery and access for collections serving all three University of Washington campuses, as well as Cascadia College. UW Libraries uses a variety of metadata standards and systems, including MARC21, Dublin Core, OCLC cataloging services, CONTENTdm, and a consortial implementation of the Alma library management system and Primo discovery service through the Orbis Cascade Alliance.
The work location is flexible after successful completion of initial training. Work hours are flexible, provided the student maintains at least 10 hours per week during the academic quarter.
