Hours: 10-19.5/week; Flexible scheduling between 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m; Monday – Friday

Overview

Working in an apprenticeship model under the supervision of the Humanities and Outreach Librarian, UW Tacoma Library Student Reference Specialists will be responsible for helping library users to navigate the information landscapes. Additionally, they will work under the guidance of librarians and professional staff on special projects throughout the Library. The goal of the position is for Student Reference Specialists to feel confident in their capacity as information professionals with marketable skills and demonstrable leadership experience.

This position can be worked either as hybrid, consisting of a minimum of one day per week in-person, and some remote work, or as fully remote if candidates reside outside the Puget Sound region.

UW Tacoma is located directly on the 594 bus line (as well as several other major routes), and your husky card’s ORCA pass will allow you to travel to campus without any cost. UW iSchool MLIS students enrolled remotely who are completing their coursework within the 50 States, but outside of the Puget Sound region are encouraged to apply.

Duties

  • Multimodal research help including chat and e-reference and information literacy.
  • Conducting library orientation sessions.
  • Updating or developing subject or class guides
  • Developing new programming, such as creating library displays, outreach work, etc.
  • Supporting the Library’s established programs and services.
  • Collaborating with librarians and staff on other projects as available: this could include collections, instruction, marketing, programming, and other library-related activities.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings, professional development activities, and peer mentoring activities.

Desired Qualifications

  • Enrollment in the UW Information School, either on-line or in-person modes
  • Experience providing customer/public service support in person or online
  • Experience in one-on-one instruction or classroom teaching, or a strong desire to learn
  • Interest in education-centered reference work
  • Interest in career working in libraries or related fields
  • Interest in social justice work
