Overview
This position provides support for the Libraries’ website, online resources, and user experience needs. The User Experience (UX) and Web Assistants will work as a team to lead user research and usability testing projects within the Libraries. We seek applicants with initiative and a strong background in UX, who are willing to learn new skills and try new approaches to problem-solving. While the Libraries has its own goals to improve the UX of our services, we have some flexibility to accommodate your own learning goals and methods/tools with which you would like to gain more experience.
Duties
Specific duties may include:
- Working with Libraries staff and other university staff to determine the appropriate methods for evaluation of the Libraries’ websites and services
- Conducting user research and producing design artifacts (e.g., personas, journey maps) to help other staff understand user needs
- Co-designing with library patrons to receive input and ultimately improve services
- Planning, scheduling, and implementing UX evaluation sessions, including designing test scenarios
- Managing projects independently and working in a team
- Writing reports/presenting evaluation findings and making design recommendations
- Evaluating online resources for accessibility
- Updating Libraries website content in WordPress
- Other duties as assigned
- Some training will be provided.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of and some experience in the user-centered design/research process and usability methods like heuristic evaluation, focus groups, and contextual inquiry.
- Experience with planning and conducting user testing
- Experience using design tools (like Figma) to create graphics and mockups
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with WordPress or other content management systems
- Experience with information architecture
- Experience with creating wireframes, prototypes and web pages
- Experience with UX quantitative and/or qualitative research and analysis
- Experience or knowledge of service design and service blueprinting
- Knowledge of web accessibility and WCAG 2.1 guidelines and/or experience with accessibility testing
- Knowledge of front-end technologies including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Knowledge of Libraries terminology and processes
- Familiarity with UW Libraries tools like the catalog, website, research guides, and digital collections
Job Expectations/Conditions of Employment
Must be able to start September 2026 and available to work at least the next 3 consecutive quarters (graduating in June 2027 or later). Student employees are not eligible to continue working after graduation. Must work Monday-Friday during business hours. Schedules to be determined with the team each quarter. Hybrid work may be available (must be located in the US).
