Collection Management Update 4/8/21

April 8, 2021

The UW Libraries collections are developed and maintained to maximize the value and impact for current and future users. The Libraries’ collection is constantly evolving to support access to and promote preservation of the widest range of educational, cultural, scientific, and historical resources possible. As stewards of the UW Libraries’ collections and funding from the University and our many donors, we build and maintain collections that support research and teaching at the University of Washington and furthers the University mission in the, “preservation, advancement, and dissemination of knowledge.” Our decisions are grounded in the Libraries’ vision and values and strategic directions and goals.

Given the state of the stacks at the Seattle Campus, the UW Libraries met and provided more context and description for managing print and physical collections at the Faculty Council on University Libraries (FCUL) April 7 meeting. The discussion included an overview of collective collections, strategic partnerships, and collection management strategies for physical collections, see FCUL 4/7 slides. With the continued intention of being transparent, we share our Collection Management Principles and Strategies. This provides a framework for evaluation and decision making in collection management, and is guided by the Libraries’ vision to accelerate inquiry, creativity, and learning for global impact and the public good, balanced with our values of sustainability and our commitment to being outstanding stewards of our human, environmental, physical, digital and financial resources.

If you have specific questions about collection management, we encourage you to reach out to FCUL voting faculty, your Libraries Subject Librarian, or me.
