Libraries Dean Announces Elsevier Contract Finalized

I’m pleased to announce the Elsevier Negotiation Team, comprised of UW faculty and librarians, successfully negotiated a new journal subscription contract with Elsevier. The three-year agreement maintains access to publications that include more than 2,500 journal titles journals in the life, physical, medical, technical, and social sciences for the total cost of over $7.7M USD and projected to reduce costs by over $890K USD over the term of the contract.
This new agreement is significant because it represents a fundamental change in the way we approach contracts with publishers to advocate for more sustainable scholarship. It is the result of more than a year of strategic planning and collaboration with UW faculty and Libraries, including the creation of Libraries Negotiation Priorities and the UW Faculty Senate approval of a Class C Resolution. These efforts provided the institutional support required for successful negotiation to lower costs and achieve greater market transparency. While the contract is a positive step forward, we will continue to negotiate and advocate for more open, sustainable and equitable partnership models with Elsevier and other publishers.
On behalf of the Libraries, I would like to thank and acknowledge the Negotiation Team and the Alternative Access Committee who contributed to the process. Their efforts enabled the Libraries to negotiate a more equitable agreement, raising the bar for future publisher and vendor negotiations.
As the Libraries renew and negotiate contracts with other publishers and vendors, we will continue to post information on Publishing Partnerships and Negotiation Updates webpage.
Sincerely,

Dear Colleagues,

I’m pleased to announce the Elsevier Negotiation Team, comprised of UW faculty and librarians, successfully negotiated a new journal subscription contract with Elsevier.
