Microform Duplication Services

Microfilm reels created through the UW Libraries Microfilming Program can be duplicated by:

Titles listed in the UW Microfilm Print Masters Inventory are available for purchase through Backstage Library Works in microfilm and digital formats. 

Microfilm may also be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan & Scanning Services.

Duplicates in Microfilm Format

  • Duplicate 35mm positive and/or negative microfilm reels are produced on Fuji silver halide polyester duplicating film.
  • Most people order positive microfilm.
  • $58.75 per reel for order processing plus delivery.

Duplicates in Digital Format

The Reel Deal

  • 8-bit grayscale TIFF images for archive.
  • 8-bit grayscale JPEG compressed derivative images for access.
  • Single page PDFs, one per TIFF (with uncorrected OCR).
  • One digital image per film frame, reflecting single pages or two-page spreads, as filmed. 
  • Files will be named using the microfilm reel number followed by a sequential counter.
  • $89.00 per reel. There may be an additional charge for Reel Deal file delivery. 

The Reel Deal Plus with PDF option

  • Two-up frames are split to single page TIFFs.
  • Thumbnail review to flag breaks, such as the first page of each issue.
  • Metadata-based, intuitive file directory structure.
  • Metadata-based file names (title, year, month, day, sequential page counter)
  • Searchable multi-page PDFs with uncorrected OCR-bound per segment. For example: one PDF per newspaper issue.
  • $89.00 per reel plus $0.12 per page. There may be an additional charge for Reel Deal file delivery.

Payment & Delivery

Payment and delivery are handled by Backstage Library Works:

  • Individuals in the United States and individuals and institutions outside of the United States must pre-pay.
  • Requesting individual / institution must pay packing and shipping charges. This may include the shipment of microfilm from UW Libraries to Backstage as needed. 
  • Orders will be shipped via UPS with the option of rush and overnight shipping.
  • There may be an additional charge for Reel Deal file delivery.
    • Backstage requests that customers send a USB drive or hard drive or purchase one through Backstage. 
    • Depending on the data size of the project, Backstage may be able to deliver files via a cloud-based file transfer service.
