The University of Washington Libraries Microform & Newspaper Collections collects and preserves many newspapers published in Washington State. These newspapers are available in microfilm format.
Titles listed in the UW Microfilm Print Masters Inventory are available for purchase through Backstage Library Works in digital and microfilm formats by following the To Order steps below.
FAQ:
Duplicates in Microfilm Format:
- Duplicate 35mm. positive and/or negative microfilm reels are produced on Fuji silver halide polyester duplicating film.
- In almost all cases, you will want to order positive microfilm.

Duplicates in Digital Format:
The Reel Deal:
- $89 per Reel
- 8-bit grayscale master TIFF images, for archive.
- 8-bit grayscale JPEG compressed derivative images, for access.
- Single paged PDFs, one per TIFF (with uncorrected OCR).
- One digital image per film frame, reflecting single pages or two-page spreads, as filmed.
- Files will be named using the microfilm reel number followed by a sequential counter.
- There may be an additional charge for Reel Deal file delivery. See more information about Payment & Delivery below.
The Reel Deal Plus with PDF option:
- Add $0.12 per Page
- Two-up frames are split to single paged TIFFs
- Thumbnail review to flag breaks, such as the first page of each issue
- Metadata-based, intuitive file directory structure
- Metadata-based file names (title, year, month, day, sequential page counter)
- Searchable multi-paged PDFs w/uncorrected OCR – bound per segment for example: one PDF per newspaper issue.

Payment & Delivery:
Payment & Delivery are handled by Backstage Library Works:
- Individuals in the United States and individuals and institutions outside of the United States must pre-pay.
- Requesting individual/institution must pay packing and shipping charges. This may include the shipment of microfilm from UW Libraries to Backstage to be duplicated or scanned.
- Orders will be shipped via UPS with the option of rush and overnight shipping.
- There may be an additional charge for Reel Deal file delivery. Backstage requests that customers send a USB drive/hard drive or purchase one through Backstage. Depending on the data size of the project, Backstage may be able to deliver files via a cloud-based file transfer service.
To Order:
- Search the UW Microfilm Print Masters Inventory to see if an item is available for duplication.
- Using the information listed in the UW Microfilm Print Masters Inventory, fill out the Microfilm Duplication Request form.
- Once we receive your order, we will retrieve the microfilm and send it to Backstage Library Works to be duplicated. We will inform you if your order cannot be filled.
- Backstage Library Works will handle all payments and ship the microfilm to you.
