Open Education and Open Pedagogy

Support for Open Education and Open Pedagogy

Open Educational Resources (OER) are course materials that are free for students and that come with permissions allowing for remixing, revising and adapting. Open Pedagogy refers to practices that engage students in the creation of information, rather than simply the consumption of it.  It leverages the “open” nature of OER to facilitate learning, and emphasizes community and collaboration, sharing resources, ideas and power.

We can help you with:

  • Finding free, openly licensed course materials for use in your class
  • Replacing textbooks with Open Educational Resources in your class
  • Authoring openly licensed course materials and textbooks
  • Using UW Libraries Pressbooks or Manifold to create OER
  • Creative Commons Licenses for OER
  • Student rights and responsibilities with openly scholarship
  • Improving the accessibility of your OER

We offer group consultations and departmental workshops* on:

  • Finding Open Textbooks and OER in your subject area/department
  • Using Pressbooks to create course materials
  • Adding interactive elements to your Pressbooks book using H5P and Hypothesis
  • Connecting Pressbooks with UW Canvas

UW Libraries Pressbooks

With Pressbooks, you can easily author and publish textbooks, monographs, teaching materials, course modules. You can apply an open license to your published work, and export books in multiple digital and print formats.

Manifold

Share your research openly or build a critical edition or digital book with your class using Manifold, a digital book publishing software. Manifold can also be used to gather feedback on drafts of a text through annotations or can allow you to share conference proceedings with broad audiences.

Why is Open Education Important?

OER, particularly open textbooks, save students money while empowering faculty by giving them more control over their course content. When UW instructors choose to use, remix or create Open Educational Resources, they reduce the cost burden for students and allow for adaptations that fit their specific pedagogical goals.  Unlike commercial textbooks and library-licensed materials, OER can be freely shared, downloaded and printed without restriction.
