The Position

Job Title: GMMN Student Assistant
Location/Department: Seattle Campus – Government Publications, Maps, Microforms & Newspapers (GMMN)
Rate: $20.76/hour
Hours: 12-15 hours per week
One morning shift and at least one night or weekend shift is required.
Positions available: 2

Duties

  • Independently staff the GMMN Help Desk during evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts as needed.
  • Help library users start their research using UW Libraries Search.
  • Locate microforms, newspapers, maps and government documents using various research tools.
  • Physically handle materials such as large newspaper bundles or oversized maps in service of various GMMN projects.
  • Assist and instruct users in the use of GMMN equipment, including computers, scanners, and microform machines.
  • Retrieve, count, and accurately re-file library materials.
  • Carefully handle rare, one of a kind, library materials to stage for microfilming, digitization, or rehousing.
  • Undertake additional duties such as special materials processing, digitization, or display creation.

  • Ability to work independently after training.
  • Strong public service demeanor.
  • Clear communication skills in person and on the phone.
  • Ability to maintain quality standards on repetitive tasks.
  • Dependable attendance.
  • Willingness to ask for assistance when you do not know an answer.
  • Availability for summer, weekend, evening, and holiday work based on staffing needs.
  • Excellent attention to detail to ensure accurate processing and shelving of materials.
  • Ability to bend low to reach microform cabinet drawers.
  • Ability to work with older, dusty materials.

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in working with primary source materials and familiarity with Microsoft Office/Google Suite of products.

Preference for candidates available to work until (or beyond) December 2027.
