The Position

Job Title:  Branch Operations Services Student Assistant
Location/Department: Seattle
Rate: $20.76
Hours: Starting with 12 hours/week
Training Schedule: Monday – Friday between 10 am and 5 pm.
Shifts after Training: mornings, evenings, and Sundays, based on your availability.

Duties

  • Provide basic assistance, direction, general information and explain library policies, services, and procedures to UW students, staff, faculty, and library visitor.
  • Assist with library opening and/or closing procedures, may include opening or closing a library.
  • Work at branch library service desks performing basic circulation functions like checking in and out library material.
  • Shelve library material.
  • Search, pull and process requested items.
  • Pick up and process materials that have been returned or left unattended.
  • Receive, pick up and sort mail, books and incoming deliveries.
  • Shift books and other library materials.
  • Conduct inventory of library materials.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must show previous customer service skills whether from a volunteer capacity, or that of a previous position.
  • Ability to push loaded book trucks, lift up to 40lbs, and work on your feet for extended
    periods of time.
  • Self-motivated with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong commitment to inclusion and in serving a diverse group of users.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, coworkers, and library users.
  • Ability to follow job procedures as written.
  • Must demonstrate a flexibility in scheduling, covering some hard to staff shifts such as
    mornings, evenings, and Sunday as possible within the bounds of your availability.

Desired Qualifications

  • Fluency at any level in one or more non-English speaking languages is preferred but not required.

Other Job Details

  • Shifts will be assigned at multiple libraries on the Seattle campus. Due to the amount of training required for the position, an availability to work at least three quarters is requested.
  • During the training period, hours are from Monday through Friday between 10 am and 5 pm.
  • Starting hours will be 12 hours per week during the training period. After the training period, more hours can be picked up.
