The Position

Duties

  • Provide beginning and intermediate level research assistance: help student clients build research skills such as locating, evaluating, and effectively using information resources for coursework and providing referrals to next-level assistance
  • Evaluate, create, and/or update learning content to support undergraduate information literacy activities
  • Develop or revise and conduct short, introductory orientation visits to select undergraduate courses or groups, focusing on library services
  • Identify and describe the need for a specific learning resource and contribute to its development and delivery
  • Develop or revise and conduct brief in-class workshops on library research topics
  • Communicate appropriately, effectively, positively, and in a timely manner, including keeping colleagues and supervisors apprised of absences, both planned and unplanned. Apply effective and empathetic listening strategies with all clients and colleagues
  • Participate actively in all training sessions to develop theoretical and practical understanding of best practices in library research help and library instruction
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings, professional development activities, and peer mentoring activities
  • Contribute to the training of new student staff

Required Qualifications

  • Current enrollment at the University of Washington for at least 6 credits (undergraduates) or 5 credits (graduates) as a matriculated student
  • Successful completion of at least one PWR course (ENGL 101-199, 282), PWAC course (ENGL 196, 197, 198, 297, 298) or equivalent composition course at another university
  • Demonstrate effective communication, listening & interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to contributing productively to an organization that values diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Availability and willingness to work some evening and/or weekend hours

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with or interest in public speaking, training, tutoring, or teaching (peer, cross-age, literacy, etc., whether formal or informal)
  • Sophomore or Junior standing in current UW curriculum, or enrollment in a graduate program
  • Willingness to dedicate at least one academic year to the position
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort using current learning technologies, including video development, podcasting, web development, social media, etc

Other Job Details

Library Student Research Consultants provide beginning- and intermediate-level library research help, with an emphasis on support for the Program in Writing & Rhetoric (PWR). Consultants provide one-on-one research consultations in-person and online, covering issues such as database searching, formulating effective research questions and theses, and evaluating and using information for specific purposes. They also support other teaching-related activities, including classroom presentations, outreach activities, and the development of learning content for the use of instructors and students.
