2025 Welcome Message from the Dean

October 1, 2025

Dean Simon Neame

On behalf of UW Libraries, a warm welcome to all new and returning students, faculty and staff.  While the Suzzallo Library, the iconic Seattle campus icon, is undergoing a major renovation to its facade, there is no disruption to Libraries services and support. We are excited to announce the “unveiling” of new resources and spaces including a critical AI literacy training, a new recording studio, the grand opening of the Health Sciences Library Commons, and a new reading area in the Tateuchi East Asia Library.

Across all campuses, the network of UW Libraries continues to provide wide-ranging subject expertise and resources that are essential for student success and UW impact.

Many of these resources focus on digital and open scholarship. From drop-in help to multi-week workshops, the Libraries provides centralized learning and support for  publishing platforms, data visualization, data management, copyright and content creation in service of UW teaching, learning and research. These skills are fast becoming routine requirements for many fields, and at UW, access to tools and training for these subjects is provided –  for free – through the Libraries.

UW Bothell and Cascadia College Library is leading an exciting student-centered effort this year through focus groups and assessments to gain student insight and ideas on library space needs. The  popular Community Reads program continues to flourish with this year’s theme “Zines & Movements”, among many other popular programs focused on student engagement and connection.

UW Tacoma Library  has launched several new programs and spaces including a guide to multidisciplinary spotlight learning collections, a popular seed library to address food insecurity and wellness, and a revamped Makerspace.

The Libraries’ resources and programs reflect the diverse needs of our UW research communities.  Along with an incredible “only at UW” collection of world-class special collections, UW Libraries is one of the most unique benefits of the Husky experience. And, our community extends beyond those with Husky cards as the Libraries’ exhibits, author talks and cultural events are typically open to the public.  You can learn about these and all UW Libraries events through our monthly update blog and calendar

Thank you to our UW Libraries teams, campus partners and donors who contribute to and collaborate with us to provide Libraries’ programs and services. Your support has a direct impact on UW students, faculty and research.

Here’s wishing you a great start to the 2025-2026 academic year.

Sincerely,

Simon Neame
