October 28, 2024 – UW Libraries has announced the permanent appointment of Hyokyoung Yi as the Director of the Tateuchi East Asia Library. Yi started her career with the Libraries in 2002 as head of the Tateuchi Library’s public services and Korean Studies Librarian, and has been the acting interim director since August 2023. In 2019, she received the University’s prestigious Award of Excellence for Outstanding Librarianship. In her role, Hyokyoung will continue to provide leadership, strategic vision, and oversight for the physical and virtual services associated with the Tateuchi East Asia Library.
“Hyokyoung is a dedicated and collaborative leader,” says Simon Neame, Dean of University Libraries. “Her experience, combined with a demonstrated commitment to excellence will positively impact the Tateuchi Library as it continues to expand its rich and unique collections, programming and services that are so important to our research community.”
Over the past year, Hyokyoung led the reopening of the Tateuchi East Asia Library after its extensive renovation and worked closely with colleagues across the Libraries to improve workflows, guide acquisitions and strengthen partnerships.

This position plays a key role in collaborating and coordinating efforts across the Libraries and with University partners. This position serves on the Research and Learning Services Directors group, and contributes to portfolio-wide planning. In addition to this role, Hyokyoung will continue to be the Korean Studies Librarian.
Hyokyoung will oversee the search for a permanent Chinese Studies Librarian during the 2024/25 academic year.
