The UW Libraries is seeking a highly-motivated and creative student assistant to support Libraries communications efforts. This position will report to the UW Libraries Director of Communications and will work collaboratively with the Director and other staff members across the Libraries to enhance marketing and storytelling efforts, primarily via the libraries web site, blog and student community outreach. The ideal candidate will have a desire to broaden skills and experience in the field of communications, but does not need to be working toward a communications-related major/degree.

Duties

Design and Content Management

  • Facilitate regular, weekly updates to Libraries web pages – create graphics, update home page, news, events, exhibits, operational updates

  • Design and update marketing materials for library programs and events – overviews, flyers, posters, slides, etc

  • Manage and create content for Libraries digital screens – removing and replacing content slides weekly and monitoring campus submissions

  • Upload, edit and design blog posts

  • Manage organization of and streamlines processes for digital asset management in YouTube and Canva, other asset storage platforms

  • Create new design templates for Library signage / events

Writing and Outreach

  • Assist in identifying potential story leads, conduct interviews with story subjects, write/draft stories that highlight the impact of libraries/librarians, services, programs, etc.
  • Submit weekly news and updates to campus partner communications via UW INSIDER, UW News, and other partners as directed – write headlines and descriptions in compliance with unique partner guidelines
  • Assist with tabling events and campus outreach to promote library events/services/general awareness
  • Co-facilitate Libraries student communications advisory group (launch TBD)

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent graphic design skills – required to submit portfolio of work
  • Proficient with web content management systems- basic HTML editing, WordPress, Drupal or similar CMS tools
  • Some experience writing blogs or narrative non-fiction – writing samples required
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Basic, introductory level skill set working with digital creative tools: Canva, Adobe products, etc.
  • Strong time management skills, balancing competing priorities
  • High comfort level working very independently with limited direction, taking creative initiative, solutions-oriented
  • Ability to work with Libraries and other campus staff/students in a professional manner in a variety of tasks
  • Ability to ask for help and accept supervision and evaluation of your work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a creative/content development role and web content management experience for a group, non-profit, or business
  • Experience using UW Libraries services, programs, and tools

Other Job Details

Candidates must be willing/able to work through summer quarter with reduced summer hours as mutually agreed upon with supervisor (if student requests).
