Context
In December 2019, a team of UW faculty and librarians negotiated a three-year agreement with the publisher Elsevier to maintains access to more than 2,500 journal titles in the life, physical, medical, technical, and social sciences for the total cost of over $7.7M USD over the term of the contract. Pricing data and the full-text 2020-2022 license is posted on the SPARC Big Deal Knowledge Base and available to download. The contract expires December 31, 2022.
Negotiations for 2023 access with Elsevier began over the summer 2022 and resulted in the decision to begin an alternative access review process, see November 2022 update. The Libraries will be unable to maintain immediate access to the 2022 list of Elsevier journal titles on ScienceDirect. From November 2 to December 9, the University of Washington Board of deans and chancellors (BoDC) or their designee will be providing feedback on behalf of their unit to the Libraries. Addressing immediate patient care needs is a priority. The Libraries will continue to support research, teaching, and learning by providing faculty, students and staff access to published articles through alternative access options such as PubMed Central, Google Scholar, and interlibrary loan — most requested articles are delivered within a few hours or business days.
Timeline

- December 7: Last day for comments from BoDC contacts on alternative access titles
