For more than 50 years, the UW’s Awards of Excellence have celebrated outstanding faculty, staff, students and alumni whose achievements exemplify the University’s mission. How has a UW librarian made a difference in your teaching, learning and research? Help recognize the impact of your librarians by nominating them for The Distinguished Librarian Award presented annually by the University of Washington’s Awards of Excellence. Are you looking for journals without article processing fees (APCs)? UW Libraries’ Open Journal Finder is a database of open access (OA) publications that waive APCs for UW authors. Search by journal title, topic, and more. Find it at the top of our APC help page. Did You Know? UW users have access to one of the largest academic geospatial collections of its kind curated by Big Ten librarians and GIS specialists. Find public datasets, scanned maps, aerial imagery and other geospatial resources. The 2026 redesign introduces a modern interface with location-based search, autocomplete suggestions, and improved tools for narrowing results. There are also a range of teaching tools and other resources that help users cite, use and share GIS data.

Open Access Week: October 19-25

Open Access Week is a yearly, global event that brings communities together to “take action, and raise awareness around the importance of community control of knowledge sharing systems.”

UW Libraries hosts a range of events during Open Access Week to highlight both the global issues that impact scholarly communication and specific resources provided by the Libraries to support the increased use of models, tools and practices that expand open access to research, information and knowledge.

[EXHIBIT] “Behind the Name of the Library: Henry Suzzallo and His Croatian Roots”

Tuesday, October 13, Allen Library North Lobby. Join us for a special event opening of the exhibit that will include remarks by visiting Croatian dignitaries, traditional Croatian music and folk dance. The exhibit is curated by Branka Bezić Filipović (former head of the Croatian Heritage Foundation in Split, Croatia) drawing on materials held in Croatian archives and the University of Washington’s Department of Special Collections.

Treasures of the Tateuchi East Asia Library: Preserving the Past, Inspiring the Future– on through Friday, Jun 11, 2027 – In celebration of the Tateuchi East Asia Library’s 90th Anniversary in 2027, this exhibition showcases remarkable treasures from TEAL’s collections, including rare books, manuscripts, maps, woodblocks, musical scores, and newly acquired materials. Discover the rich histories and cultures of East Asia and the story of TEAL’s nearly nine decades of collecting and preserving knowledge.

UW Faculty Scholarship on East Asia: Through the Decades – on through Friday, Jun 11, 2027 – This display celebrates more than a century of UW faculty scholarship on East Asia. From history and politics to literature and language, social and cultural studies, and beyond, these works reflect the remarkable breadth and depth of research by UW scholars.

Friday, October 9: Earshot Jazz Festival Presents: “Jackson Street After Hours” Book Release with Paul de Barros & Sidney Hauser Big Little Band Come celebrate the rich history of Seattle jazz at Columbia City’s, Black and Tan Hall. This event features the second edition release of Paul de Barros’s Jackson Street Jazz After Hours, the definitive story of Seattle’s early jazz scene. Event information 

Tuesday, October 13: Folio Presents “Lunch at the Shop”: An Evening with Peter Miller and Michela Tartaglia Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum invites you to rethink your approach to lunch with Lunch at the Shop: The Art and Practice of the Midday Meal. Join us for an evening of reading and conversation with authors Peter Miller and Michela Tartaglia.
